The marshland around Lake Hula was a breeding ground for mosquitoes carrying malaria and was drained in the 1950s by the Israeli government. A small section of the valley was later flooded in an attempt to revive a nearly extinct ecosystem.

Landscape Painting On Wall, Dining Hall, Kibbutz Yiftach, 2015
I grew up in a Kibbutz in the north of Israel. The kibbutz dining hall was the beating heart of the community life and my childhood.
The landscape painting on the wall is the first artwork I remember as it was bought by the kibbutz in 1984, one year before I was born.

A man made forest, planted over the Arab village of Ayn Al-Zaytun in the Galilee. After the 1948 war, its houses were demolished & pine trees, which are not native to the region were later planted as an act of erasure. The stones that form the path, were taken from the remains of the village houses.

Minefield, Golan Heights, 2013
The Golan Heights is a demilitarized zone between Israel and Syria. A landscape that is a monument for conflict.
The red triangles, which are in fact warnings of minefields, seems to me like flowers scattering the vast plains. In a minor act of intervention, I took two of them and placed them together to create the Star Of David shape.

Route 90 follows the Jordan River and the Israeli eastern border with Jordan from north to south, it also passing through the West Bank, connecting the Sea of Galilee in the north to Jericho in the south and therefore it is a main route for pilgrims and Christian tourism.

Old British Police, Gesher, Jordan Valley, 2016
The Gesher Police fortress was built by the British during the mandate period (1917-1948) next to Kibbutz Gesher. It was intended to guard the railway station and the bridges on the Jordan River. During the War of 1948, there were fierce battles between the Arab Legion and the Israeli forces over the control of this strategic area.

Watch Tower, Kibbutz Gilgal (North of Jericho), 2017
Located in the Jordan Valley and 16 kilometers north of Jericho, Gilgal was established in 1970 an Israeli settlement, and was named after the ancient Biblical site of Gilgal, known as the place where the Israelites camped after crossing the Jordan River. In order to construct the settlement, land was confiscated from two Palestinian villages. It was converted to a civilian kibbutz in 1973.

Mural, Hotel Genosar, Overlooking The Sea of Galilee, Tiberia, 2016
A peeling mural in an abandoned hotel in Tiberius. The painting is a reference for the early days of the zionist art which used to describe the local landscape in a naive way as if it was not populated.

Oasis, Old Kalya (The Dead Sea has Returned to Life), 2016
In May 1948, the Jewish population of the northern Dead Sea was evacuated as the Jordanian army took over the West Bank. The buildings of the Dead Sea Potassium Mining Company were transformed into a resort and the area of the Jewish neighborhood became a Jordanian army base. When Israel conquered the West Bank in 1967, the structures of the base were used as the first houses of Kibbutz Kalia. The name Kalia is a Hebrew acronym for: “The Dead Sea has returned to life”.

Dry Water Park, North of The Dead Sea, 2016
Its location in the West Bank territories along with the lack of water in the area after years of drought, caused the closing of the park. It was supposed to be a place of co existence where both Palestinians and Israeli can be together.

Watch Tower (sunset), “The Peace Road”, The Arava, 2016
The Peace Road is a 24 km scenic drive that follows the border between Israel and Jordan. It was built to memorize the peace treaty between Israel and Jordan that was signed in 1994. Watch Towers scatters the landscape on both sides of the border. In the region’s reality, a place which is a Symbol for peace, is at the same time a reminder of conflict.

Grazing, Highway 90, The Arava (Outback), 2017

Camel In Beduin Tent, Tourist Attraction, The Arava (Outback), 2016
The Negev Bedouin were traditionally nomadic Arab tribes who live by rearing livestock in the desert. The modern state borders have made nomadic lifestyle very difficult and forced the Beduins to settle in permanent places. The Beduin tent is used in southern Israel as a tourist attraction which appropriate the traditions of Beduin hospitality.

Withdrawal, Dead Sea (View from Highway 90), 2016
Due to the ever-growing use of the Jordan River's water for consumption and irrigation, there has been a continuous decline in the Dead Sea water level since the second half of the 20th century. This has caused the drying of the southern basin of the sea and phenomenas such as withdrawal of beaches and sinkholes.

Alone (Watch Tower), The Outback, 2016
Arava is a geographic name for the outback that stretches from the Dead Sea to the Red Sea in the south and forms part of the border between Israel and Jordan. The watchtowers are a returning motive in my journey as they scatter the landscape like monuments for the ongoing conflict.

The End Of The Road, Timna Quarries, 2017

Scenic Route, Timna National Park, the Arava, 2016
The road is a main theme in my work. I correspond with the idea of the American road-trip and the image of vast land and endless roads and import that notion into the small, restricted Israeli landscape.

Roadcut, Red Mountains (Egypt Border), 2013
The new border fans between Israel and Egypt have been built to stop the flow of immigration from east Africa into Israel.
